Post the 💩 - literally
Let me explain.
My parents have started an RV social media account, and last month they decided to go all in with 30-day challenge: post one video every single day, no matter what.
I watched from the sidelines, equal parts proud and amused as I saw them try new things outside of their comfort, finally just post instead of overthinking it, and focus on easy to make/easy to post content.
Then came the phone call.
“We've been posting every day for a month now. I thought we'd have more followers by now. We've barely grown a few hundred."
I smiled, realizing our roles had switched. Suddenly I was the one offering wisdom.
"What do you see when you look at your profile?" I asked.
"Numbers that aren't growing fast enough," she replied.
"You know what I see?
I see your videos quality slowly get better.
I see how you immediately get an idea and act on it rather than over thinking it.
I see you just posting the authentic everyday that’s so relatable.
I see both of you getting more creative with every with every post."
There was silence on the other end.
The 💩 Hits The Feed
Then came the stories that made me laugh.
"It's so strange," Mom confessed. "Remember that sunset video we spent hours shooting from different angles? Barely any views. But that quick one about how to empty the RV's black water tank? Thousands!"
"Why did the one about poop do so well?!" she exclaimed, genuinely puzzled.
I wasn't surprised. It was real. It was helpful. It was the thing most people deal with but are too embarrassed to discuss publicly. While everyone else was posting perfect moments, my parents were laughing at the real rv life problems—even the messy ones.
And even though their Instagram didn’t go up, they did have something cool on Tiktok!
With just 25 followers, two of their TikTok videos suddenly reached over 50,000 views. Their follower count jumped to 700 in a few days!
They were so busy being bummed on one thing, they forgot about growth on another.
The Snowball Effect
Creating content is like rolling a snowball uphill. At first, it feels impossibly heavy, and you can barely see any progress.
But you keep pushing anyway, learning with each step. In fact the more you go, your muscles get tired and you don’t even want to keep pushing it up, but if you stop with your consistency you lose your momentum and it’s harder every time to keep that
It’s HARD to keep going.
But it can be even harder to stop and then restart. That’s why consistency always matters so much even if it means to posting 2x-3x a week (although going back to 2x-3x a week after a 30 day challenge is totally fine)
Then finally, you reach the top and now gravity is doing the work for you.
That's the thing about creating content that nobody tells you. Everyone sees the snowball rolling downhill the "overnight success" but few witness the months or years spent pushing it up the other side.
Those First Steps to Overcome the Hill Are the Hardest
Your follower count might not reflect your efforts yet. The algorithm might feel like it's working against you. But each time you show up, each time you hit "post" despite your doubts, you're building something more valuable than followers you're building resilience, creativity, and skills that compound over time.
And please, don't wait until it's perfect. As my parents discovered, sometimes it's the unpolished, authentic moments—yes, even the 💩 moments—that resonate most deeply.
